I read this book in high school about 19 years ago and it still resonates with me today. This was my first introduction into true accounts of survival during the Holocaust and it remains one of my favorites even after reading dozens of others. The writing is poignant but to the point, emotional yet action driven. This book drove me to tears many times but is so worth the emotional journey. You never feel as though Corrie ten Boom is a victim. She is in the traditional sense but she never let the tragedy unfolding around her change her fundamental attitude of hope and forgiveness. She was a bastion of strength for many and showed a fortitude in the face of danger that is truly inspiring. She was a hope for humanity in a time when humanity seemed hopeless and devoid of feelings. There are some books you read for fun then forget and there are others you read that stay with you and change your entire outlook on empathy, compassion and courage. This is one of those books that will stay with you for a very long time.

Many great lessons learned from this book. I certainly know I am nowhere near as faithful as these women and would go insane under their circumnstances. But the most powerful lesson? I don't have to be perfect because He is (page 194).
What a profound story Ten Boom tells. She was truly a Christian woman who walked the talk. In this book (she has written others) she tells of her family hiding Jews from the Nazis, her concentration camp experiences and how she was ultimately released. A remarkable read for anyone.

An engaging and important story. Very inspiring.
4.5/5
From a spinstress watchmaker to figurehead of the Dutch Underground resisting the Nazi occupation, Corrie ten Boom's story is probably one of the better true World War II I've read.
Everyone's heard about or read this book, so there's no need to laud it here more poorly than other people have before. The .5 star detraction comes from what I feel was a semi-clumsy shifting in focus from the first to the second half of the book: the latter half is much more filled with exposition about the benevolent grace of God etc etc, and while I didn't have any problem with reading it nor did my interest wane, it was an abrupt shift.

Corrie Ten Boom, her sister, and elderly father lived and worked as watchmakers in Haarlem, Holland before WWII. As Holland gets drawn into the war and becomes occupied by Nazis, Corrie realizes that, as a Christian, she needs to do what she can to help her Jewish friends and neighbors by becoming part of the Dutch Underground, hiding Jewish people in her home's secret room from Nazis. In the end, all but Corrie lose their battle in a concentration camp after being caught. The Hiding Place is her autobiography of this time period.
Corrie's story of rebellion and survival is amazing, heartfelt, hopeful, and gut-wrenching. Her and her family's path is truly inspirational - one person could do so much good if she was able to keep her faith and love in such horrific times. Everyone should read this, or listen to the audiobook as I did. After finishing The Hiding Place, I feel inspired to become a better person and to make the most of what I have been given.

It is difficult to rate books like this for me because each one seems like a star shining through the darkness that was the second world war. How can I rate a star when no matter its size or hue or distance away, it still shiny brightly against the cold surrounding it?
I remember reading and thoroughly enjoying this book well over 10 years ago, and I must say I wasn’t disappointed hearing it on audio. The narrator is excellent and makes it very easy to listen to.
It’s a wonderful biography of the Dutch Christian Ten Boom family as told by one of the daughters, Corrie Ten Boom. I had always thought it was only about the family during World War Two, but it starts when Corrie is a young schoolgirl and finishes after the War is over. Its full of delightful stories of the different characters in their lives before the War, and then of the situations they find themselves in during the occupation of the Netherlands.
At times its funny and at other times its very upsetting and poignant. You’ll certainly be gripped until the end, to find out what happens to the family.
