I've seen this book recommended multiple times, and I wasn't disappointed. I love Gemma. She has a mental toughness that makes her so intriguing. She is the definition of turning lemons into lemonade. However, despite her inner strength she's filled with kindness. She puts others before herself again and again. The way that Hope describes the universe is fascinating. I enjoyed the descriptions of the different types of aliens and planets. Although I didn't like Simon at first, he eventually grew on me. As the story develops, we observe Simon's fierce protectiveness over Gemma. As their relationship developed, Simon proved to be a physical and emotional support for Gemma on multiple occasions. He's definitely not a human like alien. The physical and cultural differences between Simon and Gemma are a big theme in the book.
I hope we get a glimpse of their lives on the new planet in the next book so that we can delve deeper into these conflicts
. If you like the grumpy sunshine trope, you'll probably like this.

This book would have benefitted from some good proofreading.

Another thing:

How come all the alien romance novels have an alien love interest who is like, unemotional, serious, super-smart, super-strong, controlling, you-humans-are-so-weak-with-your-squishy-bodies-and-emotionally-turbulent-hearts, alpha male, more-masculine-than-a-human-man type guy?

Why can't we get an alien romance where the alien love interest is fun-lovin', free-wheelin', and has never even heard of gender?

I have to admit, though, this book got me. It got me when Simon was watching Gemma get attacked, very calmly, and holding the bars like he's just chilling there, and she thinks he doesn't give a fig, but then later... she's like. Oh. These bars are straight up BENT. I laughed hard, but then became invested.
