I loved this book. I thought it was magical and mysterious and the illustrations are gorgeous. What is up with the crowns? I don't know why that bothers people. Who cares? Can't we have a little mystery? I don't mind telling kids I don't know everything about what we're looking at and it doesn't matter as long as we are enjoying the book. Grown ups don't always have all the answers. This is one of those books where I like to ask the children what they think is happening because they say some really intriguing and insightful things. I think it's more a book for a child's mind than an adult's. And adult's with child-like minds. Reminds me a bit of The Velveteen Rabbit.

Really lovely picture book about a boy losing his favorite toy on a walk through the woods. The story pauses while the boy sleeps, and we get several pages of beautiful, wordless pictures, kind of dreamlike, about the toy's adventures. The implication from the pictures is that the toy found its way home with the help of some woodland animals (while the family is treating the toy like it's not "real").
The toy is a stuffed lion, who is helped by a fox, a rabbit, a very large bear, and a few other woodland animals make an appearance.

Minor: Grief
Henry, of course, is sad when he loses his toy and has to go to bed without it. Henry's sister says "How can Leo love anything? Leo is a stuffed toy, and toys AREN'T REAL." Henry looks sad and a little bullied on this page.bookrescuer's review

Zagarenski is, hands down, one of my favorite contemporary children’s book illustrators.

I read this in preparation for the Youth Media Awards, as I had seen it on some Best of 2016 lists. This is a beautiful book, very much in the realm of some of Zagarenski's other books. I found myself wondering about the use of the crowns, and wanted to read more about her. Beyond the author's page, I found the discussion about this book on amazon to be very interesting; she even shares images of some of the pages in progress; some pages can take a week to paint. I did find myself going back and checking to see just when the crowns appear on the animals/characters.

This book is going to resonate with many young readers who have toys that mean the world to them.
