Eighty-seven chapters of whining and complaining about parents kissing ass for their trust funds.  And why not have the dogs die in a fire the main character set… riveting stuff.

It’s one of the best emotional thrillers that I have read, themes of grief and family are the main focus of this book. It is a must-read for every human being out there.

I'm a bit conflicted on how to rate this one, because I liked the characters (the liars at least) but I guess I would have prefered a little bit of an open ending? I had a hunch after a while but was still surprised toward the end.
Not the biggest fan of the whole amnesia trope sometimes, however I get that trauma and or head injuries can severely impact you, make you misremember or blend out certain things.

positive:
-the whole family dynamic was really interesting
- ig some of the issues Gat was experiencing among a very white family was pretty relatable. Good for discussions about racism and classicism
-subtle hints but not too many to make it annoying
- the names of the dogs
- Cady's personality really shines through the narrative
-non-linear plot but not too confusing

negative:
-please find something more creative of a comparision than strong coffee. pleeeease. After the third time it really made me cringe

I don't know if it is because I am already depressed, but I had a really hard time connecting with this book, and I found the ending to be really really depressing.

I didn’t understand the point of the book until like 125-150 pages in. And there’s only 250 pages total. It was extremely slow and I didn’t feel like the book progressed with each chapter. And then, without spoiling information, there was descriptive writing regarding animal death. And I hated it. Made me want to cry not because the book was sad, but because it was talking about an animal dying and the descriptions of it, especially in a brutal way. The book itself was sad, in a good way, like in the way a good book would make you sad. I have complicated feelings about it. It just feels like there was absolutely zero plot until the very end. I did connect to the main character though. Just don’t recommend reading certain end pages if you want to avoid brutal descriptions of animal death

I have mixed feelings about this book. Is it actually gripping to read or is the page count just relatively short? Is the idea of an unreliable narrator properly thought out or is it just an excuse for messy plot construction that is - at times - clutching at straws? Is this book really unpacking the complex topics of family tensions, deep rooted prejudices and patriarchs… or is it simply a bunch of privileged rich kids frolicking on an island for over 200 pages making it extremely unrelatable for the vast amount of readership? This book is fine, quite dark in places making it very uncomfortable, but consistently average. The twist at the end is slightly unsatisfying as though it is an easy solution for what has surmounted from a messy plot. The most intriguing sections are definitely the fairytale style interludes that always leave readers with a biting social commentary.
