YA fantasy books used to be my go-to reads but I don't find myself reaching for them as much anymore unless they are by authors I've read before. So I was taking a chance on this book and I think it was a pretty decent read. It definitely took a bit for me to get into it and the beginning wasn't my favorite but by the end of the book I think I actually enjoyed it. I do have to say that it's one of those books where I found myself caring about the characters more than the actual plot of the book. I enjoyed Alessa as a main character and the moments with her and Dante were my favorite. And as cliche as it might have been, I kind of liked how the big evil was sort of defeated by the power of friendship in a way. I mean that's kind of a silly way of putting it but in the book Alessa is kind of this "chosen one" (for lack of a better term) who is meant to join with someone who is gifted with powers to kind of be able to act as a source of some sort to join together to defeat the evil. Now at this point Alessa has been married three different times to one of these gifted people and all have died because of Alessa's powers (unintentionally of course). So now they've brought the rest of the gifted people together they could fine to figure out who could be Alessa next partner to hope to defeat this evil and at first Alessa kind of has complicated feelings towards the group and vice versa (you know because she's killed all her other partners) but over time and training together they all form a bond and a friendship. We don't get to see all that much of the friendship development so I wish there was more of that but I really loved how they decided to break tradition and all work together and defeat the evil. Like I said kind of cliche but also kind of cute. I liked Dante's character as well and how he tries to protracted at first that he's this touch guy that's only helping Alessa by being her bodyguard because he's getting something out of it but in reality he has a really big heart and has been through a lot in the past. I don't think this book would ever stand against my favorites in this genre but it definitely wasn't bad. The beginning was not my favorite but once I got past the first part of the book I got more into it. I liked it enough to want to continue reading the series and see what lies ahead for the characters.

Loved this so so much! I was shocked to find out that this was debut — it reads like it was written by someone who's had way more experience.
Dante and Alessa absolutely had my heart. They are so perfect for each other, even though they tried to deny it.
This had such a good "found family" trope and the author was able to really differentiate the characters (something I was scared she wouldn't be able to do, after they were basically all introduced at the same time).
I'm looking forward to the next book! 😍
Feminism is when the male LI looses his power at the end and not the female MC 😉

Graphic: Violence, Religious bigotry, War, Injury/Injury detail
Moderate: Sexual content
Minor: Death, Self harm, Death of parent
The sexual content is mainly fade to black but is a bit more graphic than typical YA.
