Felix is excited about the job he got helping someone recently blinded even though he really knows that he has very little actual experience in doing so. As these two fight their attraction and get settled into a routine, the past comes back and Felix finds himself in situations he never once imagined. Through it all, these two fall in love with each other as they battle outside forces. The humor adds the perfect touch to this story.
Normally I adore Alice Winters books, and while I liked this one well enough it's not one of my favorites. I feel like the romance between these two came out of nowhere and I never quite got it. How Felix even became Lane's caretaker doesn't really make sense either. He has no background to be someone hired to help out a recently blinded man. Of course, the snark was fun and things got a little better as we got into the meat of the mystery.
Still trying to get proof on our bad guy wasn't always believable either. Lane pulls off some crazy stunts for a blind guy while also being incapable in some way easier ways. Plus Felix is throwing himself into a dangerous situation for which he has no training and isn't exactly going about it smartly.
I liked the characters as individuals and I grew to like them more as a couple by the end of the book, but the actual romance was a little suspect. I'm curious enough to read another book in the series in large part because I like the author's writing so much usually.

February 2023. MM romance thriller about a caretaker for an ex-cop who was blinded by a ruthless gang in an undercover op, who are still out to get him. Book 1 of a 3 book series.
Really enjoyed this a ton! Highly recommend for fans of the genre. Tons of banter and humor in it, but wasn’t over the top like my previous foray into Alice Winters books had been. Glad I gave this series a shot.
Great action and danger elements, and great chemistry between the leads.
The cop’s being blinded worked well as a complexity that forced him to rely on the other lead, staying close and guiding him and getting him roped into the adventures of it all, while the caretaker’s nosy personality and past experience with things like lock-picking made him a somewhat fearless and eager partner in crime as they try to stay alive and solve the case they aren’t on that has them at risk.
Definitely will check out the rest of the series. listened on Scribd, all 3 books in the series are on it.
“Hidden in Darkness” by Alice Winters. Book 1 of 3 in the series.

I realized…that I can still see…when someone helps paint the world for me. You have given me sight again, Felix, I am not going to push you away.
If there’s one thing this author is good at, it’s writing OTT, snarky and funny characters. She does it so well. These are definitely the kinds of books and characters I have to be in the mood for, but when I am, they’re such a good time.
I listened to the audiobook this time around, as I stalled out about halfway when I tried to read the ebook a while back. Definitely a case of me reading it at the wrong time, but I also did think the book felt slow in the middle, even in audio. It picked up again thankfully and was full of delicious action and mortal peril.
I really, really love how Felix doesn’t let the blindness change the way he treats Lane at all. He gives Lane just as much shit as everyone else and pranks him constantly. It’s obvious that Lane needed that, too. The badass law enforcement guy with the teeny tiny snarky ball of sass and sticky fingers. It somehow works, lol.
“Are we here?” he asks. “I swear to god, if we’re at a stop sign again and you tell me we are here like when we went to the pharmacy, I will beat you within an inch of your life.”
I’m looking forward to starting the next book.

“Lane, you’re going to run into something, step to your right,” I say. Lane, trusting me like the good man he is, steps to the right and bumps into the counter. “Fuck,” he growls as I start laughing.
“I’m not scared of being hurt…I’m scared of being alone,” I admit. I feel like I shouldn’t tell him. I feel like I’m giving him a part of myself that I can never get back. And if he doesn’t accept it, I don’t know how I will ever recover. “I’m scared you will leave me.”
“I hate this. I hate seeing people that I know,” he grumbles once we are out of earshot. “Well, it’s a good thing you’re blind then,” I say.

Interesting premise, could have used a bit more relationship development but still looking forward to reading the rest of the series.
Hidden in Darkness is full of action, yet this book is hilarious. I utterly fell in love with Felix and Lane and their snarky remarks. Felix is one of the funniest characters I have ever read. He always voices his opinion and can't stay quiet. Felix is also incredibly nosy, getting him into trouble and the oddest predicaments at the worst times.
But the best part? He balances Lane's grumpiness, acts as his eyes, and has his best interest at heart. Lane is guarded after losing his eyesight while working undercover. It's a big adjustment not being that badass independent man he used to be. Felix is hired to help Lane at home. The 25-year-old firecracker doesn't allow the former cop to wallow in pity. They are attracted to each other instantly.
Neither of them is looking for a relationship. So why not add a bit of scorching-hot fun? Felix is perfect for the 37-year-old grumpy guy. Did I mention this is an age gap? A steamy one, by the way. While Lane tries to adjust to life outside the police force, the guy responsible for his blindness is still out there.
Hats off to Joel Leslie for his exceptional narration. He brought Felix to life, which probably made me fall in love with him and his quirkiness even more.
