When I finished this book I had to sit in silence for a few minutes to let the afterglow of the magic settle. I loved it!

I fell in love with the Mystwick School of Music in the first book; I love the world of Mystwick and music spells that keep the world running. Unlike the first book, though, I loved Amelia in this book. Her friendship with Jai is fantastic! They understand each other and have so much fun. Jai made me laugh out loud several times.

Then the story of the Midnight Orchestra was exciting! It wasn't too scary to recommend to my children but it was still mysterious enough to keep you guessing and wanting to know what happened next. So well done!

**Soft Spoiler:
I have to add that I LOVED how Amelia overcomes her "anger" at the end. It was a great message for any young person who might be in the same situation she is in. Beautifully done.

I'm still enjoying the magical music boarding school vibes, but also the positive messaging and relatable-to-middle-graders content. Though this is still age-appropriate some of the big themes of the series so far have been about grief, processing one's emotions, being yourself, and being kind, and finding your own self/ expression.

I received an ARC of this title from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own and were not affected by the free copy.

Amelia Jones is back again! She saved Mystwick from her composition gone wrong, became an official student, and is ready to learn to use her powers with her very own teacher to help her. With their first Composer in 20 years, Mystwick can finally enter the international magic competition. However, the Midnight Orchestra, half performance, half black magic, is interested in her, and she wonders if they can help her Compose. But they aren't all they appear, and everything goes superbly wrong. Can Amelia Compose them out of trouble this time?

I was thrilled when the first book came out. Music creates magic? Yes, please! This book did not disappoint. Our old characters continue to develop and new characters fill some voids (evil villains! Muh ha ha). Amelia does slightly better in this book, trusting her friends and asking for help, but there wouldn't be much of a plot line if she hid nothing.

The pictures in the book were absolutely stunning; my favorite is from the battle of the rock bands-so pretty! I wish there were a few more, but I always looked forward to the next one and enjoyed them a lot. They actually even worked on a Kindle. I was concerned they wouldn't convert well, but they looked great.

The only "downside" in this book were that the plot twists were fairly obvious. However, this is a middle grade book, so to some extent, that is to me expected. I cannot wait for book 3 to come out and will absolutely keep reading. This book is perfect for anyone that enjoys magic and/or music.

The plot thickens, but it was a little too angsty for my liking, if I have to be honest.

Of course, I now understand Mia's reason for bullying Amelia and keeping Darby away, but it was a lot to take in—especially before it was revealed Mia's mom was being held hostage. I was really hoping that the Amelia Joneses would work together much earlier than it actually happened.

However, I completely knew that Mr. Midnight was Amelia's dad. As soon as I saw him, I just knew. Obviously, Mr. Midnight wouldn't be a random dude that hasn't been introduced before. Dunno. It just made sense. I was a little less sure when we learned the whole backstory of the orchestra (zombies and all), but nah. I was right!

Furthermore, I assume there is going to be a third book, purely because Amelia's dad vanished, and Amelia herself questioned why the Midnight Orchestra dates back way before her dad. To be honest, the latter plot point could be explained by saying "Mr. Midnight isn't a person, it's a title that gets handed down". Like, Eric's "bad" family are the previous Mr. Mightnights, and Eric kinda didn't want to, but eventually took up the mantle when Susie died to try to get her back.

Here's hoping the third one (if there is a third one) won't have too many friendship troubles.
