The Chrestomanci series is a must read for all children and adults! The Lives of Christopher Chant is another masterpiece by Diana Wynne Jones! If you love Harry Potter or anything along those lines, Diana Wynne Jones is an essential part of the Cannon of of Fantasy Writing.

Boy, was I excited about getting into Christopher's backstory, and this book did not disappoint. I really enjoyed all of the characters and their dynamics, and how Christopher changed throughout the story. I also liked getting to explore more about alternate worlds, and all the complexities that brought. Lots of great ideas, great characters, everything I love about Dianna Wynne Jones.
This was an entertaining read, though an alarming trend of family members who want to kill you seems to be emerging in these books. Also, in the version I read there were some obvious continuity problems (people's hair changed from brown to black to brown again, was the number he carved an 8 or a 9, that kind of thing). But amusing, light, and good for a rainy afternoon.

One of my all-time favorite fantasy books, The Lives of Christopher Chant follows a British boy who can travel to other worlds in his dreams and learns that he has multiple lives. Alternately haunting and hilarious. Diana Wynne Jones is not as clever at endings as J.K. Rowling, but is perhaps superior in engaging the reader throughout the body of the book.
fresh from Game of Thrones: Blood and Gold, I dived into this childhood book. it made me realise how LONG ago it's been since I've read this - a time when I had yet to grasp acid sarcasm (imagine that!)
some childhood books you revisit (like old friends; like comfy old shirts; like Harry Potter) and realise can no longer fit you. with a glad delight I realised this was not the case at all with Christopher Chant; if anything I could now better appreciate how adept Jones is at capturing the awkward anguish of growing up. Read this in more or less one sitting, laughing aloud the whole way.
It's rare, so rare to revisit an old friend and find that nothing has changed. I've missed you, Millie and Christopher Chant.

I have read and reread this novel, listened and re-listened to the audiobook, beginning in my early teens and continuing through my mid 20s and it continues to be one of my favorite fantasy books. I love the magic system and especially Christopher's adventures in other worlds. I also thoroughly enjoy Christopher as a character and his development throughout the series.
