I enjoyed reading this, it would have been a five star book for me if it hadn't been for the underlying internalised racism, misogyny and fatphobia throughout the whole thing
So I couldn't finish this. First there's the neglectful parents (however traditional this British trope, I can't stomach it), then the kid being taken advantage of by a plausible villain; then when I flipped to the end I discovered that the one & only POC is actually from *a different universe* - NO. just no. And it's not even old enough for it to be a product of its time.

How deeply ENGLISH wow. A fun read, and nice to return to Diana Wynne Jones! Interesting to see how my values and worldview have developed from when I first read this sort of work in primary and high school, to now be uncomfortable with the overt racism and sexism (major yikes at the "Heathens")
A sort of prequel to Charmed Life, The Lives of Christopher Chant go into the story of, yes, Christopher Chant, before he became the Chrestomanci of Charmed Life. Chrestomanci, as he was known, was probably my favorite character in CL, and I loved reading about him in his book.
Lives starts off slow, but still clever and interesting as Diana Wynne Jones always is. The plot speeds up towards the end, which is also very interesting; the characters are, as usual, brilliant. Christopher, however, has to be my favorite character, simply because of, hello, CHARACTER GROWTH! Modern authors take note of this phenomenon and do try to use it once in a while.
Anyway. This is a great second book - not that I expected anything different - and I can't wait to get my hands on the third.

Oh crap, now I have to read all of these. SO GOOD! Magic and kids and adults and school and strong girls and boys who arent idiots and it's in England (sort of). IF only there was a scene where they ate some delicious food, this would be a perfect book!
