Another stunning and engaging collection from Ada Limón, here deepening her studies of family, heartbreak, love, ageing and the natural world. I love Limón's style: her direct language and her clear images build to a depth of emotion and tenderness that is satisfying and surprising. This collection deals with the loneliness of the pandemics, as well as the joy found in small moments of connection, and her interactions with animals. She also looks at the meaning of family, particularly for someone who will never be a parent, and at the ways in which we learn to appreciate our parents and grandparents more the older we get. Frank, heartbreaking and surprising, this is another collection to treasure.
Limón's poetry reaches crescendo here, grounded as ever in nature, and the body, and birds, and the past. I haven't always connected with her work, but this is some of her strongest, and I appreciate it even if it hasn't found an audience in me. Hope she keeps making her stuff.
This collection absolutely obliterated me. I’ve never read poetry that felt so akin to personal feelings that I struggle to express, but here it is. “I have wanted clarity in light of my lack of light” ripped me in half and “against nostalgia” sewed me back together. I will be rereading and rereading and rereading this collection for many years to come.
the hurting kind is a god-tier poem, but should've been the last poem in the book
