this series is so criminally underrated i don’t know how it took me so long to get to it.
this is book two of a trilogy — check here for the review of the first book!
THESE CHARACTERS! THIS WORLD! THIS PLOT! this agonizing, anxiety-inducing, had-to-keep-setting-it-down-and-walking-away book has me convinced this is going to be one of my all-time favorite series. i can hear groans from the audience at how i say this every time but LISTEN.
this series has MAGIC, it has DJINN, it has middle eastern and south asian inspired lore that make the story rich and dynamic, it has a LOVE TRIANGLE that is ruining my ENTIRE LIFE, it has political scheming, it has socioeconomic strife. there are so many elements to this story that make it literal kryptonite for anyone who loves a good, immersive fantasy story.
this sequel picks up where book one left off, and then immediately segues into a time jump. we get to see how the ramifications of book one’s ending impacted all of our favorite characters, and the ways in which they carry those traumas with them. it’s a beautiful testament to perseverance, to quiet tenacity, and ultimately to the ways in which we handle our grief.
IT’S GORGEOUS. it’s MOVING. it literally hurt me to read it because i was clinging so desperately to what i decided i wanted in city of brass. a lesson for me to trust the process. (*cries in fixed sign*)
ultimately this was lovely in every way, with a wild ending that has me dying for my library hold of empire of gold to come through.
it took me a while to get through this, not because it wasn't fantastic, but simply because my spidey senses were tingling in the 'pain imminent' department, and i also didn't want it to be over too quickly. a little self-edging.
an easy, easy five star read, and i can already tell book three is going to break me.

Review : Kingdom of Copper ,book two of the Daevabad Triology picks up five years after the catastrophe that wreaks Daevabad . The former part of the book mostly deals with how the major characters are coping up with their loses and grief and also an insight to the current situation of Daevabad. The magic system has become even more complex with almost all the major characters plotting for their revenge which makes the turf even more strained.
In Kingdom of Copper we get to see the various layers of the characters that weren't quite apparent in City of Brass including their softer side. A considerable chunk of the book dwells in the intricacies and politics of the court and I absolutely loved it. I think that is what makes me love this series even more, how Chakraborty makes the plot complex by adding newer elements with each book. It is like, you couldn't even imagine anything more grave or disastrous might happen, and then boom she proves you wrong.
Nahri as a character I felt has grown leaps and bounds, in City of Brass where she was a former deciever and her only motive was to pocket some gold from the palace, here we see her as a compassionate healer who with the help of another major character (read my favourite psssst) is trying to set up a hospital for the lesser privileged.
Ali is another character that has a tremendous growth graph and after his ill fate at the end of the first book, he finally learns to be someone that can be looked up to rather than being his brother's guard and his father's puppet.
A lot of new characters who play major roles in the story also make their appearance in this second book and I personally like all of them.
Packed with high fantasy and a brilliant representation of the Muslim culture filled with djinns and other fictional creatures from their mythology, this triology has become one of my top favorites.
Cannot wait for the conclusion of this brilliant series!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Less intriguing than the first, which I tore through in 2 days. I'm hoping book 3 ties everything together. I'm not much of a fan of cyclical vengeance, and that's what book two shaped out to be. With weird half allegiances and seemingly passive attitudes towards half enemies and friends/almost lovers/who knows. Disappointed that nearly every character decided to go against their better judgment for 5 years, leading to all the ruin laid out here. Little action until the last handful of chapters. And for auch a Big Bad, Ghassan died way too easily. But with how everyone comes back so easily, maybe this isn't the last of him we'll see.

The world building was really hard to follow, but I think it’s because too much time has passed since I read the first book. NONETHELESS this was wonderfully intricate and the characters have an incredible amount of depth.
Unbelievable. How is book two better than the first one? I have no words other than Ali <3 <3 <3
A friend recommended I keep reading the series even though I was a bit disappointed after the first book. She was totally right in that the sequel was amazing! I love the characters and world and can’t wait to see what happens next!
