Nahri’s life changed forever the moment she accidentally summoned Dara, a formidable, mysterious djinn, during one of her schemes. Whisked from her home in Cairo, she was thrust into the dazzling royal court of Daevabadand quickly discovered she would need all her grifter instincts to survive there.
Now, with Daevabad entrenched in the dark aftermath of the battle that saw Dara slain at Prince Ali’s hand, Nahri must forge a new path for herself, without the protection of the guardian who stole her heart or the counsel of the prince she considered a friend. But even as she embraces her heritage and the power it holds, she knows she’s been trapped in a gilded cage, watched by a king who rules from the throne that once belonged to her familyand one misstep will doom her tribe.
An excellent follow up to City of Brass and the story flowed along very well. I did get a bit bored with Nahri's story but when the pace picked up again I was glad that I'd stuck with it as the last third was fast-paced and really exciting. I'm more familiar with the various tribes and races now so found the book easier to follow than the first.

4.5 ⭐️ I can see how this would easily be a 5 star read, especially if you love the politics with court intrigue. It’s just not my favorite thing to read. I did love the character stories in this one although I wish it would have been more angsty.

Why did nahri swindle her mark, doesn't say
Darker version - describes the dark things people do for war
Dara tries to be good but can't - dragged into bad things
People get too upset at words, not that deep when muntadhir insults Ali about nahri etc
Dara's magic doesn't really make sense, how can he conjure clothes for people and make horses with wings
History of alizayd is interesting, killed his wife by accident
Good outlook into war and how everyone does atrocious things
Nice to see the warring emotions in Ali - how he wants a simple life and how he wants to improve the kingdom
Great backdrop to the story of war hurting everyone and everyone wanting vengeance
Ali is very torn, interesting character, not just one dimensional but obvious how his morals hurt others around him
Characters not that believable when Ghassan dies then they carry on with their task - they're only kids
Why does Ali randomly have strong water magic?
Why is nahri so strong in magic cuz of her ancestors?

Alizayd al-Qahtani is the best character ever written. Felt slightly betrayed by Muntadhir but honestly, one of the biggest draws to this series is that no character is fully right, they're all biased and a little in the dark, and that makes the whole story really compelling.
