Okay, Victoria Schwab, I just read this and the second one, and I am just sitting here PATIENTLY WAITING for the third of this trilogy. I've been doing nothing else since May. Okay, maybe that's a bit of a lie. But it feels like the truth.
This is a series that will absolutely linger with you. And as a librarian with lots of friends in the archives program, this gives me a lot to constantly think about in terms of ethics and morals...as well as how I'm dealing with death in my own personal life. If you had the chance to wake up the representation of your loved one, something completely, totally against the rules, just for the chance of hearing their voice again, seeing their eyes again, watching how they moved again, would you? This is the sort of choice that Mackenzie Bishop goes through each time she convinces an archivist to bend the rules and let her see her brother. And it's a difficult choice, at that.
And then there's the whole conversation where her family is moving on from the death of her brother and her grandfather, learning to live again after being surrounded by death, and then there's Mackenzie who must struggle with being surrounded by the dead at various hours of the day.
Schwab's writing is stunning, heartbreaking, beautiful. Her characters are devastating, hard-willed, convincing. If you're looking for a new series to read, this is it. This is absolutely it.

This book was good but at times just felt off. I enjoyed the concept overall but felt like I needed more. More of what I honestly at this point couldn’t tell you.
I enjoyed the little twists and turns and finding out what was going on but I honestly didn’t feel any huge excitement or anything once it was revealed. The biggest thing was if Wes was going to make it after getting injured there at the end.
But honestly this book feels like it could of been a one shot and ended here. I know there’s a sequel but I don’t feel the need or want to read it currently.

Here’s the thing. This book was enjoyable and I enjoyed the characters and the idea. I think one of my big mistakes with this book was I went in knowing a lot of people in the Book community whose opinions I trust did not enjoy this book that much. Therefore I went in thinking I may not like it. However the main character annoyed me SO MUCH because she knew the archive rules and her grandfather’s rules but would keep breaking them AND THEN THAT IS WHRN BAD THINGS WOULD HAPPEN and she’s just keep doing that where she would think she knew best, break the rules, things went wrong, regret, repeat. So... 3 stars
This was my first Victoria Schwab read and I can see why readers like her books, but the first half was kinda slow for me. The world was really fascinating and for me, this book was a weird mix of the tv shows Ghost Whisperer and CSI haha.
