Solid horror thriller. Tension is slowly ratcheted up through the story, though it peaks for the kill scenes, which occur only sporadically through the book
until they discover the underground city and then it's a bloodbath
. The characters aren't great people (with a few exceptions) but the story is fundamentally about their arrogance, so it works.

The prose is fairly utilitarian, but there's an air of authenticity around the creature and the backstory which is engrossing enough that the story feels more weighty than it is. The kills are well-executed and the creature is horrifying, particularly when it's the POV character. The ending - and some of the mysticism - is a bit corny for my taste. But it's not awful, and it's brief.

Worth a read if you like creature features or want to watch bad people get eaten.

A really engaging horror story with some, albeit not fully developed, interesting characters and a very intriguing creature. I'm not sure if it really belongs to the Native-American lore, but it has a sense of authenticity to it that is usually hard to manage.

The pacing is quick, almost frantic by moments and there are quite gory scenes, so if you're looking for a quick, traditional monster story this is for you :P

I'm surprised that this is the first book by this author, I'll be sure to check any other he has.

Just a fun quick horror novel. Nothing too deep, very mid writing.

Enjoyment Rating: 4.5

A pretty straight-forward monster book but it is enhanced and made unusual and more special by knowledgeable use of the author's Native heritage combined with a surprisingly sound base of investigative police procedure.

This must be the quintessential magical Native American story and I loved it!
A mysterious monster reminiscent of, but not quite Big Foot, a sunken city, lots of gory murders and only one man, the Shaman Little Hawk, who knows what to do...
Starting as a very bloody crime story, it only ever becomes genuinely interesting after Little Hawk enters the scene and his different approach to danger, fear, life in general is what makes this book awesome. And the end was so emotional, I love that!
I'll definitely be reading more books by the author.

I wasn't really feeling this when i first started but I enjoyed it. It wasn't scary at all. Idk if it's supposed to be at all but for me it wasn't. Once I got about 40% I feel like it picked up and started coming together for me
