Fun read of a creature feature and definitely a good addition to genre fiction for horror. I would have liked to spend a bit more time with the monster.

The Crota was such a unique creature and I loved that the book started out immediately with the monster as one of the POVs, but it felt like that fell off in the second half and it just became about this sheriff and a bunch of somewhat trite macho-isms in the face of danger.

A combination of Native beliefs, a creature feature, and small town horror. You can’t go wrong here. I really enjoy how Owl Goingback is able to weave native traditions and ceremonies into his stories. Mitakuye Oyasin

Pretty straightforward not scary horror. In terms of writing, the highlight is undoubtedly the deaths because the characters were otherwise one dimensional, escpecially the few women who were there solely as props. Sometimes the writing was just dumb, like “They exchanged a few words in Indian,” which is strange coming from this author who’s trying bring a bit of authenticity and representation to his work. Take a shot every time the word “bowels” comes up.
