I wish I’d re-read “There There” prior to reading this one. With such a long hiatus between books I had forgotten some of the characters and main threads. I didn’t enjoy this as much as I did the first novel but highly recommend reading them back to back.

Too many characters and not enough time to connect with them so that by the time I got to 2018 I had no clue who these random new characters were and just seemed so random to have stories about drugs and gender issues, could not get into it which was sooooo disappointing

prepare to cry your eyes out
really loved the tangential  stream-of-conciousness reflections throughout

After reading There There and loving it, I was so excited to read this. Left feeling a bit disappointed as I felt like the plot was all over the place. Nothing really happens, plus all the different POVs feel a bit disorientating. Some lovely bits within the pages though.

I really want to give this a 5, and as with There There, Orange’s writing is nothing short of a fucking work of art. But I think I was a little too jarred/split by the difference of timelines. Honestly, particularly given the beauty of Orange’s prose, I think I would’ve preferred two books, one being an expansion of the historical story and one an expansion of the family. But genuinely so wildly amazing.
