Daimon (Covenant, #0.5) is a prequel to Half Blood. This gives you an insight and what to expect coming into Half Blood.
Quote:
"I don't know why she was so frightened; I was the one facing the crypt keeper. And if I survived this poor excuse for tradition without ending up carrying this hag's bedpan for the rest of my life, it would be a miracle worthy of the gods that supposedly were watching over all of us."
Alexandria(Alex)is a half blood. Three years ago her mother took her away from the Covenant, where she was training to kill Daimons; evil aether stealing creepers.
Something really bad happens and now Alex is running for her life. After a few days sulking inside a run-down hotel outside of Miami, Alex decided she would go back to the Covenant. On the trip there, the horrible Daimons show up and alter her destination.
This was a great introduction into Half Blood. The action was enough to entice the reader to jump on the Half Blood band wagon.
I look forward to more from this author and now onto Half Blood...

I picked it up on impulse because it was on my phone for a long time, so I thought why not finally read it. I didn't fall in love with it right away, but it made me curious about the rest of the series. And I'm excited what is happening to Alex after this. :)

As far as Novellas go, Daimon wasn't too bad. It struck me as something that was either written originally for the book and then was cut and added to later for the novella, or was written after the series as the prequel. Either way, it was good. In it we learn a tad bit about Alex's life that she had in the mortal world, and what exactly happened when the Daimons attacked her mom. Of course, we already know what happened, but this is obviously a more detailed account.
I don't think it's necessary to read the prequel, it doesn't give that much more information so if you're a slow reader it probably won't be worth your time but if you can zip through it in under an hour like I did, then hey why not? oh, and it's free!

Even though I read this after I finished the series, it was definitely good to get more insight of what happened before Alex was caught and taken back to the covenant.
Daimon follows Alex in the events before and a bit after her mother's dead. We can see how they live in Miami, hidden among humans.
Alex was still kickass in this prequel eventhough she hasn't had training in three years. The boy she was dating (just like her mother I can't remember his name >_<) was such a wuss, dude! When two other guys were bothering Alex and her little boyfriend, Alex kicked their butts and what does he do? He breaks us with her. Good riddance, Alex! She was still even thinking about her longago crush Aiden St. Delphi anyway.
When Alex finds her mother's lifeless body in her house things get bad for her. She runs from the house after killing a daimon and tries to find her way to the Covenant. Of course we all know (anyone who has read Half-Blood) that things don't go that well.
I didn't think this was as good Half-Blood but it was likable for a prequel short story.

it was interesting to read how it all started. But she's still kind of one-liner silly.
A lot of people have been saying to read this book before Half Blood. I actually disagree. Reading this in bits and pieces parallely to the Covenant series was a great experience. It left some mystery to Alex's past (and it's not like Daimon adds this much value to the story), and felt like getting flashbacks, throwing me to considerably calm surroundings in the middle of a shit storm.
Overall it's a nice addition. Again, not totally necessary, and I didn't like the amount of times Aiden is mentioned as a lifetime crush of hers. Felt like too much.
To those who are torn between starting with it or Hald Blood - dive right in to the heart of the series with no hesitation. It's not worth postponing this masterpiece for this novella.
I'd say 3.5 stars.
