I feel almost guilty giving this one 3 stars because I did enjoy it, but it just isn’t one that will stick with me. I wanted to know the ending but I wasn’t INVESTED in the ending.
The characters are a little bit superficial. I get that part of that is because we don’t know much of their backstories, which is part of the mystery that drives the book forward. (and in all fairness, there are some twists i definitely didn’t see coming!) Unfortunately, it also makes them all less relatable.
And the connections between all of them are just… all over the place. The middle name thing? Why is that such a big deal? And then the bigger connections are so hard to believe!
I don’t know, for me there were a lot of good pieces in this book, but all put together they still didn’t amount to much.

Only a few chapters in to this book, I was struck by Hoover's refreshingly unpretentious writing style. There are times where you can tell an author was trying too hard, simple scenes buried in unnatural adjectives and metaphors. "Confess" wasn't like that, which made it a more enjoyable read. I generally don't favor romance books, but Hoover's story was a bit different in a couple ways, setting it apart from the genre's usual clichés.
