khaw‘s writing was, again, absolutely gorgeous. the story itself, however, felt very lacking. i don’t know if it was initially published as a short story and i only classified it as a book (or, novella) in my head, but had i viewed it as the former i would’ve maybe went into it with different, or less, expectations. i think if this had been stretched to just a hundred more pages and expanded on some more i would’ve really loved it.

What a book
I decide not to listen to other readers opinions and just experience this book for myself and I’m really happy I did!

Tbh I really liked the story, the plot was a bit mehh
But it’s a short book so it cuts to the chase

Cat’s character had the only depth in the whole story, my heart ached for her and I just wanted her to be happy yk
The book really makes u hate some characters and just scream at them for being so stupid
They had no character development throughout

The ending sucked it was very underwhelming
The build up was very good and Casandra is very good at building that tension.
But I felt like the ending could’ve been way better

Also I like that Casandra used Japanese folklore for this book it was very well done, not everyone knows how to do that and not make it cringey or cliché

I would definitely recommend this book for people who just like to read horror and just want to be spooked and don’t care much about the plot or character development!

It’s a good book I’m glad I read it

A wild, hellish ride. It read like poetry, and it hurt like hell. Such incredible characters and tension between them in such a short span. It had me squirming and biting my nails as I read it.

Man, I just don't get it. I was looking forward to this, and I have seen a lot of praise, and yet... It was so terrible to read. There was no buildup to anticipation and I could barely tell where characters even were in space, or why they were doing whatever they were doing at the moment. It was confusing, had VERY purple prose, and wasn't even spooky or thrilling. :( I feel like everyone that is leaving a good review is playing a prank on me.

For a short little horror novella, I quite enjoyed this story. It moved fast, almost a little too fast at the end, and the characters were (purposefully) awful characters of people, but the plot and Japanese mythology infused spooks really made it a worthwhile read. You'll likely finish this book in a few hours so I'd recommend giving it a shot.

I really vibed with the author’s writing style, but the plot and characters were just not it.

I’d be curious to see what else this author comes out with in the future.
