Quicksilver is 12, and her only companion is her dog, Fox. There is a boy, Sly Boots, who sometimes lets her stay in his attic if it gets too cold. If you're alone, no one can hurt you. But an old lady with a scraggly dog wanders into town, seeming to be a witch, even though the Wolf King has outlawed witchcraft for years. Can Quicksilver let the woman change her life?

I loved this one so much. It has heart, it has complex plots about good and evil and the nature of truth, and what friendship is.

I've loved a few of LeGrand's other books, but this one felt bloated, flat, and heavily cribbed. Disappointing for an author I normally look forward to.

A thoroughly enjoyable middle school read. I found the action exciting, the imaginative world building and story excellent, the cast of characters were surprisingly and work off each other wonderfully. It has a legend-y myth feel, which I quite liked.

Oh and in response to other reader's finding the character unlikeable, I found that Quicksilver acted how a unloved 12 year old would act. Sometimes they are selfish and rude and stupid, but that is because they are 12, but also because they are 12 they are brave and flexible and quite able to learn and adapt. Their characterizations felt very natural to me

I originally decided to read this book because I won the companion sequel arc in a giveaway. I'm really glad I did because I loved this book. My favorite character is Fox but I love all these characters even the villain. There were a few twists I didn't see coming and others I wasn't surprised by. I also like that she wrote the title into the story [I don't know why, exactly, I just love that]. This is the first book of hers that I've read but I've heard no one talk about it. One of my favorites so far this year.
