I love this book. I am really excited it has been added to our state reading list for next year. Everyone needs to meet Ellie and spend some time with her. Life is tough. Things happen. A lot of it is out of your control. But with the help of some really good friends, things might just turn out ok.

I truly enjoyed this audiobook. The narrator really captured 6th grade snark and spark very well. I cared about nearly all the characters, and the plot moves quickly. I've also seen some GR reviews complaining about some of the portrayals of disability in the book and I'd love to learn more. Let me know what I missed and what I can learn, but this was just my speed.

I love reading a middle school book with a heroine who is on the outskirts, but finds a way to fit in her own skin. Ellie has CP - and when she and her mom move to help her grandma with her grandfather, Ellie figures out a new place her way - and new friends that like her for who she is, rather than what she has.

Age: 3rd-6th grade
Food: Baking
Identity: Cerebral palsy (written by mother of child with CP), autistic friend
Tough Issues: Grandfather with early stage dementia, new kid at school

Excellent story about the new girl adjusting to a new school with a strong cast of personality-rich characters and a scrumptious inclusion of Ellie's baking passion.

Unfortunately, because this was written by a parent of a disabled child the true representation and experiences of a child with CP may not be entirely accurate. Currently (June 2020), some professional & blog reviews take this into account but believe the experiences, admission of hardship, and depth of Ellie's character make this one a winner for disability representation.

I really loved all the characters in this one, especially Ellie. I hope there's a sequel in the future.

There’s a ton of ableism in this - internalized ableism from the MC, and from the rest of the characters. At one point one character who is not disabled says the MC is “playing the cripple card” and that goes completely unchecked. Nope nope nope.

This was amazing from start to finish. There is so much heart and such a beautifully unique view into what it is like living with cerebral palsy and the hurdles most have no idea you have to cross. You will fall in love with everyone in this book and wish that you could jump in and hug them all!

Ellie and her mother move to Oklahoma to help her ailing grandpa, who lives in a trailer park. She faces prejudice from kids at school due to this, but makes some true friends as she learns not to care what others think. Ages 9 and up.
