The Darkness Outside Us by Eliot Schrefer

I really liked this concept. Despite an overlap with many topics commonly used in science fiction (romance in close quarters, AI, clones, new planets...) Schrefer does a marvelous job keeping the plot fresh. I particularly appreciated that the AI (called the OS, or Operating System of the spaceship) is not a black and white character: it is by times strictly observing protocol, humorous, protective, villainous, or merely doing what it has been programmed to do. Reminiscent of The Honors series by Caine and Aguirre and the Murderbot series by Wells, this book was a delight to read. While I feel that the individual clones' experiences could have been depicted in more detail, overall it was a thought-provoking, well-written book that makes us question what it means to be human and whether humanity deserves to go on after Earth is destroyed.

I had no idea what was going on in this book. I had some theories but just went along for the ride. This is romance light because the book focuses on what is going on at present so don't expect an epic love story. I was honestly so sad for the MC's because of everything that happened (No spoilers so I'm being vague). I really wanted there to be an epilogue a few years into the future to see how things turned out.

This book is like an episode of Doctor Who. Not one thing that I expected to happen happened, but it was so good. The sci-fi was developed and not something I’ve read before but it still had room for the love and romance.
