Found the prologue a bit hard to get into, but once I pushed through to the main chapters it was a blast! Great urban fantasy.

What if each borough of New York was a person? Jemisons answer to this question might upset some people. Probably the same people who are convinced that Jesus was white. New York is a melting pot and so are the boroughs.

This novel was a fascinating concept with a great message. Some of my favourite sections were about the New York art scene and gentrification. Overall the novel explores the tension between the diversity of New York and white nationalists.

The concept is insanely inventive. It takes a little while to get into but readers of Jemisons other work would probably expect that. In fact, it's probably slightly more digestible than her high fantasy.

The only reason this novel if 3 stars is that while the concept was great, the novel itself was a bit long. I think this could have been a fantastic short story/novella/think piece. I enjoyed it all but I think it would have packed a bigger punch in a different form.

This was weird in the best way. But also a love letter to NYC which I adored on so many levels.

F-ing Staten Island Man...

Bonus points for including Staten Island. Minus points for non Staten Islander insulting Staten Island. Even though the portrayal of Staten Island was accurate in many ways, I can't give 5 stars because somehow I still have an ounce of pride for Staten Island and didn't enjoy becoming characterized as the evil one. For some reason hoped Staten Island would have a happy ending. Not sure how many people from Staten Island would ever pick up this book, but would be curious to know how other Staten Islanders felt reading this book. Loved the Broken Earth trilogy and still enjoyed this book (despite the lack of love for Staten Island).
