I heard the film was pretty good, so naively assumed the book would be better. How wrong I was. This has to be the dullest thriller ever written.
Clancy is known for copious amounts of detail: detail about military hardware; detail about procedure, diplomatic protocol. It gets to a point, however, when you wonder whether he really wanted to write a textbook. You have the makings of a great spy story, weighed down by acres of dry description, like trying to watch something interesting but with a boring old man standing in the way holding forth on all the great stuff he's spent his life researching.
I generally like to plough on through to the bitter end, but just gave up after yet another bunch of two dimensional characters were introduced and another few acronyms were explained. One for hardcore military fans only.

While I originally started reading the book for an assignment, I found it hard to put it down. The suspense felt in the story is very real and easily to picture, especially if you have also seen the movie. The movie actually stayed very true to the book in most cases, with the deviations being made to make sure the film would not take 3 hours.

Read (hardback) and listened to this one on audible. Fantastic story. Different and better than the movie. Really impressed! Because I saw this movie many times, I was not sure I wanted to read this. Boy am I glad I did. Book is way better than the movie. Lots of action!

One of the most tense reads I've had, I can still vividly remember passages despite reading it years ago. It's very technical but that's part of the beauty of it. It's set in one of the most tense periods of history and is a great story.
A book with a slow buildup but and incredible final 30 pages
