Fun hard military fiction, really the prototype for the genre, not as good as later work

Waaaaay too much technical military lingo for an audiobook. Probably better in a different format.

Well, the brilliance and technical knowledge loaded throughout this book about naval submarines and the like was lost on me. I remember thinking after the first 100 pages, "So... This book is the longest hunt for a submarine, ever!" I was finally won over by the witty dialogue and characters. The characters were so well-done that I had people in mind for who each reminded me of. I also liked the complexity behind thinking who are the good guys here and no country's philosophy is without its faults.

It’s a good submarine chase and spy novel. I just wish there were some maps showing where the different ships are, especially in the final confrontation.

Honestly I loved it. Always enjoyed the movie but this was different enough to be a totally new story. Pacing was great, characters were likeable, twists were twisty. Definitely going to read again someday.

Clancy's first Jack Ryan novel is so detailed I'm pretty sure I could pilot a Russian submarine. Its pretty amazing some of the knowledge that he was able to attain and included in the novel in a way that fit in and didn't read like a manual. The cast got too huge at times but overall a good book, just a little dense.

a slow start that will easily scare away readers who are not dedicated enough to finish a sizeable novel. If you can get through some of thr drier bits the story becomes quite exciting. Through the latter half of the book I found myself reluctant to even put it down!!
