Such a great first book from such a well known author in Tom Clancy. One of the most well researched books about technical details of the navy, submarine warfare and the cold war in general.
While this book has its issues, including way too many characters to keep track of and the great assortment of technical details about submarine warfare that went over my head, it was still such an enjoyable experience. I understand why Tom Clancy is a household name. And such a great debut novel at that. 4.0 out of 5 stars.

Not my typical reading fodder, but an interesting cold-war-era novel. Adventure, but not too unbelievable, and technical and accurate sounding without being either too dumbed-down or too unintelligible. I especially liked the backgrounds and character sketches.

Not a bad book overall, a little heavy on the military "porn" for me.
Read it while I was in high school. Probably the first political thriller I'd ever read. Now the genre is one of my favorites :)
Ultimately, quite a good book. However, the technical details - whilst impressive and clearly exhaustively researched - was a bit much at times. Perhaps a little TOO much depth and minutiae. The characters were not very fleshed out, I didn't get a sense of any of their personalities save that Jack Ryan was a nice guy and Ramius was pissed off with the Soviet Union. But there were some excellent dramatic bits, where I was really fascinated about what was going to happen. That rescued the book for me!
