I watched the movie as a young enough child I didn't understand any of it, and had forgotten all of the plot but Sean Connery and that there was a submarine. As a result, I didn't have an expectations for the plot and the book was really good. Even with some overly technical explanations and excessively intricate plot lines, I found it easy to follow and fun to read. I'll take a look at a few others in the series.
Took awhile to get into and get my head around all the navy talk but the second half was typical action packed Clancy.

I absolutely loved it. Had no idea that it was his first book as well, felt a lot more sophisticated than that. I thought the plot was great, tension was handled really well, generally done with a small number of ships or battle groups, so you can know exactly what's happening with everyone. I liked the segments that were away from the October for a while, everyone trying to guess where she was and what she was doing and nothing from her directly. I liked pretty much all the characters. All the technical jargon was relatively well done, though I did start to filter a fair bit out. Nice to have it when it felt important though. I really liked the sub battle at the end, that was probably my favourite bit. Another highlight was the way the massive naval confrontation was handled. The political side and explanations and justifications directing what happened on the ground (ocean). Felt weird reading it as Russia's actually invading Ukraine. Russia is very much the weaker side in this, and the overall message is hopeful, which is quite a contrast with the awful things happening now.
