Easy breezy writing, with sassy characters and snarky comedy intermingled with a delightfully weighty Norse-type fantasy realm, with gods and magic and bone casting and demons and ordinary humans trying to survive in a world that really doesn't want them to be there at all. It's rich and warm and lush, and I feel like it would have been five stars if I could just have focused on it for more than ten pages at a time. I think it's COVID, I can't concentrate on books, but it did somehow keep losing my attention.

But, I think that was me, not the book.

The characters are richly drawn, and the world has a weight to it. Events have consequences. It's compelling and strong, but perhaps the cast is a little too large. I had a hard time keeping track of who was on what side. Again, I'm just COVID-befuddled, so this is mostly a pointless review, just for my own later references when I go to recommend it to people.

I didn't even see the twist coming, and that was all together delightful.

For my own reference, it was Mostly Skyrim, with a dose of the Rohirrim and a touch of The Witcher, with some good snarky sassy sarcastic characters to boost it up. Highly recommended to Sanderson or Hobb people.

I really enjoyed this book and am looking forward to the next in the series.

There was  decent amount of world building in the beginning and it started off a bit slow but picked up and then I couldn't put the book down.

I love Josephine despite how naive I found her... She def grew throughout the book and I look forward to seeing how her relationship with Raithe grows.

Also looking forward to seeing how arion and suri grow as well.

A quite satisfying epic Young Adult fantasy novel. Love so many things about it. The main character is just so awesome with his impulses and the way he overcomes adversity, and his best friend is just so crafty!

Bonus points for all the characters in this book which literally give the finger to the leaders when they obsess over tradition, and are stronger and wiser for it!

DID NOT FINISH: 35%

I think half the issue is I just finished Red Rising audiobook by Tim Gerald Reynolds so starting a similar book with the same narrator is messing with my head.  Also book is moving a bit slow for me and I need something a bit more engaging while I’m in Utah. Definitely will try again in the future.
