I’ve read this 20 years too late. In fact, I’ve had this copy for 20 years. The sticker from Borders is still on it (it’s 2025 and Borders has been gone for more than a decade).

While this book is now considered problematic, it’s a very interesting work of fiction depicting geishas. I found the main character to be so many things and wanted to hear more from her perspective.

I really still think this is an interesting book and was a great read. Regardless by whoever it was written by, I was taking any free time I had to finish it.

3.5 stars rounded up.
It’s an entertaining and enjoyable read.

It was really good. It was easy to read, and it made me feel good. Well, sort of sad too, but it talked about truthful things which is good. I liked how it talked about beauty and love and business and life and routines. But Sayuri was so naive and never really learned. And Pumpkin and Hatsumono are kinda poop sometimes.

It was fascinating to get a glimpse into the world of geisha. The unworldly makeup and hairstyle, the shamisen, the tea party, the dances, the mizuage (if you know, you know) and thousand other neat little custom that Japan is so rich in.

A hate re-read, since this author is a POS. I first read this as a teenager and since found out how the author betrayed the woman he interviewed when publishing this book. This is just junk food, sprinkled with a healthy dose of horrible ethics, asian fetishization, sexualization of young girls, and bad men-writing-women tropes.
