Forget what I learned from watching TV shows like ‘Prison Break’ or reading books like ‘The Cartel’ by Don Winslow, ‘She Rides Shotgun’ by Jordan Harper plunges you into the intense world of prisoners, ex-cons, drug runners, corrupt cops and contract killing on an entirely different and personal level. I often find novels written from various viewpoints arduous but Harper’s writing is slick and taut moving fluidly between the characters. I noticed a steely thread keeping the chapters or episodes strung together creating an impelling read and tying the plot together. Nerves of steel, steely resolve, prison bars, barbed wire, cages, blades, bullets and ties that bind grabbed me all the way to a satisfyingly ambiguous (yup!) ending. Brilliant!

“Bring the bear,” he said. “He’s good for us.”

Forget what I said earlier about literary fiction, I struck gold with this. It’s unputdownable and captivating, the writing style works perfectly with its contents. It’s dark and gritty, but the strengthening father-daughter relationship between Nate and Polly brings heart to the novel. It’s tightly plotted and mostly dual perspective, with a few others dotted throughout (which I thought were fantastic additions). And the bear! The descriptions were so vivid and it was great. For me, this book was greater than the sum of its parts and I loved it. Honestly, I don’t really have negatives. Might upgrade to 5 stars when I mull it over more.
