I saw another review that started with "What the fuck did I just read?" and I think that about sums it up.
Yes, there's a philosophical aspect behind it, but if you want that, you can get the same lesson out of any of De Sade's other works, or honestly just read his wikipedia page. I came here because De Sade was mentioned in The Rebel, and there was more philosophical discussion in the couple paragraphs about 120 Days than there is in the actual book.
I liked the storytellers as characters, and it was interesting to see that even despite them appearing to have agency in their stories, they still ended up in these terrible situations.

Well. As people often say, reading Sade is a game: if you give up you lose, if you finish the book you also lose. I enjoy challenging myself, and oh boy was this a trial.
I've read splatterpunk and extreme fiction before, but 120 Days is very particular, including for its real life context. A lot has been said on all subjects concerning this book and all things Sade, including its legacy and its status as a classic.
In the introduction of the edition I read, it argues that reading Sade should be a troubling and uncomfortable experience. Due to its uncomplete nature, a lot is left to our own imagination, and "[...] Some may feel that to engage with the text in this way is to enter into an uncomfortable complicity with the brutality at its heart. While it may be easier to read this text passively - or indifferently - to do so risks another form of complicity: to ignore the violence is to leave it unchallenged, to tolerate the intolerable".
I agree. The violence and depravity does begin to bore due to its repetition, "yeah yeah shit and mutilation, we get it", but we should not be comfortable with what is described. The true horror of this book lies on the dynamics between victims and agressors, on the unempathetic abuse that is inflicted with complete disregard for the human being, all for the sake of sexual gratification.
This book is not for everyone, that much is clear. It's violent, gross, disturbing, pedophilic, among others. But it is also an exploration, an exercise on human nature. It's even funny sometimes, with how evil these characters are and how they act. It aims to take human depravity to the extreme and it succeeds.
I understand its place in literature and how it sheds a light on the worst parts of humans. As a reader, you still lose in the end, but at least you made it through. In fact, if you're interested in Sade, I'd recommend reading about him and his works rather than reading the book itself, unless you want to experience it first-hand. It is a whole experience, even if not enjoyable.
But make no mistake: somewhere, at some point, someone in real life has done the actions here described. If not all, the great majority. 120 Days of Sodom is an exercise of the imagination, "how far can one go", but it is also an exercise on "how far will one go". Sade himself is believed to have committed some of what he writes, at least to some degree. And others have committed them on a larger scale than the one imagined by Sade.
As one of my university teachers once said, "things in real life are often far worse than what we could possibly imagine". Let this book be a reminder.

Não mas agora a sério, já muita gente disse isto antes e eu volto a repetir porque têm razão, este livro é um jogo com o Marquês de Sade, se não conseguires acabar o livro, perdes, se acabares o livro perdes na mesma.
4 homens raptam um grupo de pessoas com membros de ambos os sexos, várias idades e belezas, e procedem a experimentar todo o tipo de devassidão sexual.
É um livro sem qualquer tipo de moral, narrativa ou desenvolvimento de personagens. É praticamente um índice de todos os tipos de filia que possam imaginar.
Todos os atos de perversidade que possam imaginar, este livro tem mais e pior.
Torna-se um bocado repetitivo e não aconselho a quem não tenha um estômago forte.
(Uma dica, não tentem dar significado ao livro, este, na minha opinião, é um livro literal e sem qualquer tipo de segundos significados, o libertino apenas se preocupa com o prazer do corpo, então qual seria o objetivo de dar um sentido moral a este livro?)
Apenas lhe dou as três estrelas porque cheguei a uma altura na minha leitura do livro em que já não queria ler mais, pois estava enojado, mas não conseguia parar de ler, em parte devido à escrita incrível do Marquês, em parte pela minha própria curiosidade mórbido-sexual.
Não consigo, de consciência tranquila, aconselhar o livro.
Mas se tiverem curiosidade em ler aquele que é, muito provavelmente um dos livros mais gráficos de sempre, vão com a noção de que vão haver, em grande quantidade: fluídos corporais de todo o tipo, momentos que vão levar o leitor a questionar quem é que na sua sanidade terá imaginado aquilo que está a ler, e total desrespeito pela moralidade e pela vida humana.
Mas posso dizer pelo lado positivo, que é uma experiência semi-sensorial, o leitor sente exatamente aquilo que o Marquês quer que o leitor sinta. É uma montanha-russa de emoções, que passam por vontade de vomitar, nojo do mundo, excitação sexual, sentimento de culpa, tristeza e desespero, várias vezes.
É, na sua base, um guia, um exercício intelectual que procura a resposta à pergunta "onde é que a mente humana é capaz de chegar para obter prazer sexual?". Uma pergunta ao qual a resposta tem vários nomes, pedofilia, zoofilia, necrofilia e a lista continua, o livro funcionando como um crescendo, ficando cada vez mais extremo.
E o próprio livro é o Marquês a responder à sua própria pergunta "quão longe conseguirei ir?"

Aunque hay muchas cosas que me gustaría decir sobre esta obra, me limitare a ser breve en esta ocasión.
¿Por qué 3 estrellas? Por sus virtudes como obra escrita, que son las siguientes:
- Yo esperaba, por todo lo que se dice de Sade, una historia llena de asquerosidades, crueldad, horror, escenas eróticas traumáticas... y me he quedado satisfecho en ese aspecto.
- Los 4 protagonistas (el duque, el obispo, el presidente y Durcet) están tienen, como personajes, un gran trabajo psicológico y detalles que los hacen más memorables y perturbadores.
- La narración, aunque peca de ser muy descriptivo, se lee con rapidez. La primera parte es la más extensa, pero a partir de la segunda, Sade, al empezar a quedarse sin papel, decidió proseguir su obra como un borrador y proseguir en un futuro próximo, cosa que no logro realizar, y por tanto, cada día se resumen las pasiones de cada relatora de forma numérica, más un resumen de los demás acontecimientos relevantes acontecidos en dicho día.
Ahora, que alguien lo lea o no, queda a criterio de cada persona. He aquí algunas cosas a tener en cuenta a la hora de leer esta obra:
- Si eres alguien que quiere demostrar hasta que punto es capaz de aguantar el lado más ridículamente cruel del ser humano antes de sentir que vas a vomitar, este es tu libro.
- Si eres incapaz de ver un perro al que le falta un pata sin echarte a llorar, aléjate inmediatamente de este libro.
- Si eres fan de A Serbian Film y Midori, la niña de las camelias, les va a gustar.
- Si buscan inspiración para torturar a sus personajes en su obra de ficción, aquí hay para mucho.
- Si te excitas con alguna de las escenas de tortura que aquí se describe, ve inmediatamente a un psiquiatra. En serio.

Interesting in how boring it is. Porno that's impossible to be aroused by; shocking material that loses all its shock by monotony, repetition, and being more a spreadsheet than a tale; and satire (I guess) that says, "Oh, you imprison me for indecency? Then I shall write 400pages of peepee poopoo and that'll prove you wrong!"
Look, I don't know that any of us could have written better while imprisoned, but this is one you can safely read the wiki for rather than the whole thing and not miss an experience. Sade's life seems to be more interesting than his work, so far.
