Brians Winter

Gary Paulsen

3.75 AVERAGE

This is, by far, my favorite book of Brian's Saga I've read so far. It's more exciting, dangerous, and passionate than the first two, although Hatchet comes as a fairly close second.

For those unaware, this book is basically an alternate ending to Hatchet if Brian was forced to live through an extra few months in the wilderness. The extra depth and challenges that the winter presents make a welcome edition to the survival perspective that came with the first book.

Honestly, I would recommend that everyone who read the first book should take a look at this one. Forget the second book, it's fairly pointless and you don't need it whatsoever to understand this one. Seriously, if you liked Hatchet, you'll probably like this one even more.

I skipped book two, where apparently Brian is joined by some sort of documentary crew, and moved to book three. It turned out that a lot of people wanted the same, therefore #3 is an alternative continuation of #1. Good.

It's as visceral, physical, hungry as the first book. The only unfortunate thing is that the author seems to suddenly be taking his responsibilities seriously – in the first chapters I can almost see him leaning towards me, waving his finger, saying "and remember, kids – do not ignore those signs as Brian did, because here are the consequences!" This doesn't last, luckily, and the book continues to be hair-raisingly brilliant.

Off I go towards the fourth one.

I like the alternate ending. It added to the adventure

Way better than the river. Unbelievable, but within the realms of my suspension of disbelief. Brian would’ve loved the Outdoor Boys YouTube channel.
I’ve got nutritional questions about Brian eating only meat for months on end. Get that boy some vitamins, moose meat ain’t gonna cut it.

Have you read [b:Hatchet|50|Hatchet (Brian's Saga, #1)|Gary Paulsen|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1385297074s/50.jpg|1158125]? Ever wonder what would happen if Brian wasn't rescued before winter? Here's what might have happened.

I enjoy survival books and this had good details, though it seemed a bit simple and short. Still, I think my 9-year-old will like it.

Anyone want some boiled moose?
