Brians Winter

Gary Paulsen

3.75 AVERAGE

Great Paulsen book. The hunt/kill scenes were a little too graphic for my taste though. Moving on to number four in the series.

This book felt so strange to me. It seems weird that Paulsen more or less went back and wrote a second ending to Hatchet, just to see what might have happened if Brian had been trapped in the woods through the winter. It just seems bizarre to do that, but I read it and it wasn't bad by any means. It was fairly interesting to see what Brian might have endured, though I can't ever see this book as being "canon" because it really isn't. Brian was rescued after 54 days, he didn't make it to winter. You can't really take that back, even if you feel like you need to know what MIGHT have been.

I'm not dissing it at all. I did enjoy it. I just...didn't find it necessary? I don't know, it was weird.

"He awakened in the morning with a stomach still bulging full and grease on his lips and something close to joy in his heart."

I really didn't like this book. This book didn't catch my eye. I really only read this book because we had to read it in school. These are just my opinions. Some other people might like it way more than I did.

My favorite in the Hatchet series thus far! I really loved how Paulson rewound the clock and told an alternate story. My family and I are listening to the audiobooks together and are enjoying Brian’s tales of survival in the wild.

*4.5/5 stars

Simple and captivating.
