“For boys, being funny is like a commodity. You are never going to be thrown out, never going to be socially isolated as a boy if you are funny. And if you can be competitively funny, that’s even better. And this is why boys get into so much trouble.”

My face while I was listening to this book: 😳

Must read for anyone who works with teens. Slater is a great reporter who tackles difficult topics with nuance and care. Her understanding of intersectionality paired with today's climate online is impressive.

As a new teacher who is often dealing with instances of racism and misogyny at school, this book helped me feel seen. I always want to learn more about how I can best tackle these issues in a sensitive way, and this book helped me realize I'm not alone.

Very informative piece about a recent event that I had no idea even happened. The author not only describes the sequence of actions that took place, but also grapples seriously with what a transformative/restorative justice process for them would be. There were some moments where the author got really in the weeds about tangential topics, but overall, I feel like this story is important for people to know.

A great book to the view of racism and the effects it can have on a community. I like how it gave a look into everyone's perspective and reactions. The talk on race and living in an area where you are barely represented. How being a minority can be so taxing and the real-life scenarios minorities go through on a day-to-day basis. Specifically in their own circle and environment.

This book tackles a complicated situation with the grace and nuance it deserves. Slater's writing is sensitive, even to the people in the book that we are least inclined to think deserving of such treatment. As a teacher, it would be really interesting to explore this book with a group of teenagers to get their take on it. The events of this story could happen to almost anyone who isn't careful about what type of content they engage with online, and I think it's an important lesson for young people to learn.

I've seen some criticism of the poetry - I will admit that it did sometimes feel disjointed and jarring, but I had to remind myself that I'm a little older than the book's target audience, and the poetry might resonate more with younger readers. It actually reminded me a bit of Ellen Hopkins's work, which I loved as a teenager.

A very interesting book about the experience of a group of teens that where involved in a social media account or targets of that account and the repercussions from that experience.

This book was amazing. I loved the authors coverage and explanations of the story. She treated the situation with the nuance it needed and the perpetrators and victims with the respect they deserved. This is an excellent book for teens on the serious issue of racism on social media and its negative impacts.
