This book was much too long. First half or so was a bit of a slog - lots of repetition and somewhat convoluted. Was a bit bored by it but felt a commitment to see it through to the end. Last 1/4 of book was good and read at a better pace. Fairly predictable although a few surprises. Tied up a bit too neatly in the end.

Pretty standard Morton fare: lost babies, secret-keeping elders, late game reveals that are both ridiculous and absolutely the only thing that would make sense, Australia. Thoroughly riveting, a 4-star experience but because it’s a formula and not as excellent as some of her other books, I’m calling it a 3-star read — although if you aren’t familiar with Kate Morton it will likely be even more absorbing and more stars for you.

Decades old tragedy is finally resolved after the death of the family matriarch. Twisty ending.
