I don't think I want to rate this one yet because I am still processing from a plot twist. I will say that I am not normally a fan of poetry style books but this flowed well and was easy to read. I really cared about the main characters and it invoked strong feelings throughout the book. It was educational as well but again, I am still processing. Right now I'd rate it as a 3 but I don't think that's fair to the book so will come back to it after some time.
I usually love novels in verse, and the cover of this one was stunning as well, which always helps, but. . .it just didn't do it for me. While McBride has some lines that really work, the free verse eventually started to feel loose, unfocused, and just too much. The characters lost my interest (could be that I am not a "young adult" for whom the book is intended!) and I ended up skimming--and though I won't reveal the ending, it didn't win me over. I guess I'd say I found it disappointing: it felt like the author was trying too hard to be creative, and ended up obscuring some interesting ideas.
Looking forward to talking to the friend who lent me a copy to get her take on it!

One of the few books that actually caught me off guard. My jaw literally dropped at one point. Haunting and beautiful.
Amber McBride’s poetry and knowledge of history and storytelling was an incredible work of art. I found it slowed down a bit halfway through but the ending was well written and brought it all together.
Wow.
Not exactly sure what to say about this, except that I’ve never read a book like this before. It was beautiful and heartbreaking and I’m gonna go sit and think about this one for a long time.

The gasp I GASPED at the end.
So beautiful.
I wish I’d read a physical copy vs listening to the audio, though.
