Clever, diverse, poetic, eye opening. But also sad.

content warnings: death of family by car accident, grief, physical abuse, mental illness, racism, bullying

following a car accident that took everyone in her family except for her, moth is living with her aunt, feeling alone and uprooted. she meets a boy named sani, who’s also searching for his roots amidst his battles with depression. they go on a road trip to find where they come from.

this has been on my tbr for quite a while, so i’m glad i finally got around to it! having also read we are all so good at smiling, i love the way amber mcbride depicts mental illness. i also appreciated the way first love was explored even with moth and sani’s individual struggles. i’d recommend this to anyone who enjoys novels in verse.

Moth feels disconnected from the world after she is the lone car crash survivor until she meets Soni. They choose to embark on a road trip that may heal them both. Me (Moth) is a heart-wrenching book on grief, loneliness, and finding yourself once again. McBride is a wizard with how she can completely absorb the reader in the intense feelings of Moth and make each emotion relatable. The moth is a haunted protagonist that just wants to be the girl she used to be. The lyrical rhythm of the words and emotion was like a dance. This book will gram the hearts of readers taking them on a dark and healing adventure.

Beautiful. Heartbreaking. A bit slow and esoteric at times, but that ending? Wow.

I did not see that ending coming! I loved this story from beginning to end, written in poetry.

I went from being intrigued to feeling like this was pretentious to being dumbfounded at the end. Not really sure how to rate that, so 4 stars is my best guess.

A poignant journey seeking connection and fulfillment in our magic, in our roots in order to live with our tragedies and soar.

I received an ARC of this book from the publisher via NetGalley.

I have never read a book written in verse before. I'm not sure i'm a huge fan of this style, but it lends it self well to the story. My hesitation on this writing style is that I feel like I could fly through it fast, and I needed to remind myself to slow down. Many of the passages are conversations, many are thoughts. and some are a growing song. I found some of the conversations the hardest to follow. Often parentheses were used to attach to names, but often I found it distracting. I couldn't follow. I don;t know if that is my inexperience with the style, or how the author wrote it. That said-- I really really like this.

This story is haunting and sad, yet it is not depressing. While both Moth and Sani have lived through horrible situations, and both are hurting and greiving in their own ways, they come together and they are good for each other. As they journey from Virginia to New Mexico, you can see how they are helping support and love each other, encouraging each to heal and giving the other the space to be themselves while providing them a person to trust in.

I was not prepared for the ending of this story. I broke. It was completely unexpected, at least to me. But that's all I'll say because I don't want to spoil it.
