I loved the intersection between two backgrounds and showing the similarities. I was not ready for the ending, I normally see the patterns and can see something like it but I completely missed it and for that alone, I appreciated this book.

Nothing prepared me for this ending. This book is a thing of haunting wonder.

This story was written in an almost poetic way and the descriptions were unique and fresh. I, however, am not one for poetry or poetry-like books. I try and I try, but it is fruitless; it’s just not my genre.
I absolutely love the cover though!

This young adult novel is told entirely in a series of poems. It makes it a quick and compelling read as the poems tell a complex story of guilt and survival, with a strong message about history and how we are all connected. Highly recommend for readers looking for a book that you'll be thinking about long after the last page.

I am starting to really enjoy Amber McBride utilizing novel-in-verse. The images she creates are vivid and beautiful, and I'm starting to appreciate the word repetition.

I love novels in verse, and this book was no exception to my love for the format. The lyrical flow of these novels allows me to easily fall into the stories being told, and I love being swept up in a good narrative.

Moth and Sani's journey is absolutely beautiful, and the verse format this story is told in just feels like the only way this story could have been told. I found myself immersed in their journey toward healing together, and their love story as it unraveled.

Both Moth and Sani's heritages were woven through the novel in a way that respected the traditions of their cultures while allowing the legends and traditions they used and discussed to still feel accessible and understandable as an outsider.

The ending twist was both super fitting and an absolute gut-punch of a revelation. It felt both inevitable and shocking and completely changed how I viewed the entire novel.

I am getting more into stories in verse and this was a good introduction. It is also a YA book which I thinks helps make it easier to follower for people just beginning in verse. I think the story of self discovery and grief was really told and the verse helped add to the story rather than take away from it. I think that Sani & Moth truly learn from each other and grow throughout the book and it was very rewarding to read.

I bought this book from a small bookstore in Estes Park in October. I placed it on a small table in bedroom where I forgot all about it. Nearing the end of the year, I picked up another book to get ready to read it, and found this one under it. It was a story written through poetry- a quick read to up my 2022 book count. Little did I know this book would capture me and not let me go until I finished it. I read it, cover to cover, in a single sitting (not hard because it is poetry) because it was literally that good. There are some lines in this book that will sit with me forever. The extended metaphors and the beauty of the language enraptured me and brought me on a journey with Moth and Sani. Now that I’ve made it to the end of the journey, and I recognize that some of the “metaphors” were not metaphors, I feel the need to reread this. I know a second reading will provide me with a very different journey-one I look forward to.
