One of the best books and duologies I’ve read recently and ever!
Rachel Gillig continues to be a unique, poetic, beautifully spoken, and well-written author with this as another testament to her work.
This darker take on a fairytale style “what if?” manages to be completely its own, while reflecting many beloved pieces of tales you may know, making a world that is both easy to fall into and dazzling in detail. Perfectly planned, leaving breadcrumb details to unravel the mystery throughout every chapter while remaining completely unpredictable without hindsight, and consequently leaving you hooked for one more chapter every time you reach a final page.
Easily loveable yet complex characters are quickly enthralling especially as their dynamics mix and unfold leaving blossoming friendships, addictive romance subplots, and family roots ready to fight for one another… or those that they have found to call such.

Such a unique magic system and a very clear plot line. I wish Elspeth and Ravyn got more time together and I'm curious to see what will happen next.

oh my. Currently I am beyond grateful I didn’t read this book when it first came out so I can read the second book right away.

Firstly characters immediately liked Elspeth and her character had allure making me want to know more. Her family made my blood boil even her aunt and uncles family.
Rayvn yew, oh I’m so worried as to why more people don’t call him their book boyfriends. Cause seriously I’ve got another one to add to my list *smh* I love the broody nature of him and how elspeth is the same.
The “side characters” really made the story too, jysper and elm I LOVED while I am so behind irritated at ione I am hoping she has something up her sleeve.
Oh and yeah the thing inside elspeths  head, at first I liked him now I’m … indifferent & feel many things at what has taken place with elspeth and the Shepard king

Although I had soft dnf’d this book because I wanted to read something else when I came back to it… it ended up being a two day read in which I stayed up till 4am reading it because I literally could not put it down. And when I did I HAD DREAMS about it. It was paced perfect to me I would say “fast” paced but in a way that all made sense it didn’t skip things I thought were important but it also didn’t linger to long on how tbe cracks looked in the cobblestone LOL.

All this to say I thoroughly enjoyed this book and will be buying the 2nd one ASAP because I MUST know what is going to happen.

This story was intriguing from the get go, but as it progressed i worried i had guessed all of the revelations. However, I’m glad I stuck with it because the drama at the end is very much worth it. On to the second book!

I loved everything about this book. The main character having a nightmare trapped in her mind, is relatable and terrifying in so many ways. The magic aspect of this book, was satisfying and kept me intrigued. Also, I enjoyed how bits and pieces of the story unraveled and new elements to the story were unveiled. Well written and I can’t wait to pick up the next book.
