This was a unique (at least to me) read that was gothic, mysterious and a fun read! It starts off slowly but really picks up about halfway through and got more interesting. The ending wasn’t what I expected and I’m looking forward to book 2!

Be Wary. Be Clever. Be Good.
"Atmospheric" doesn't even begin to capture the beauty of Rachel's writing. The magic system is so unique and the whole world is built around the lore and use of the cards. I love the characters, especially the Nightmare, and his rhymes set so much of the mood and mystery.
(Any time I see an allusion to The Highwayman, I get chills)
*updated after a reread, and it holds up as one of my favorite books.*

I did not mean to finish this in a few hours holy shit

what a page-turner! the world building had me worried in the first half, but it quickly began to make sense and now I’m INVESTED.

I also just love a main char that is inhabited by a morally ambiguous entity. Venom, Vespertine,… this is my jam

the romance was just enough and honestly I didn’t expect to like ye olde fake dating so much, even if it was a speedrun

so glad I bought the next one already

I had this book on my TBR list for a few months and I’m so sad I waited to read it. It is easily my favorite book I have read this year and I can already tell Rachel Gillig is an author I will actively seek out. This story was a dark and new twist on fantasy for me. The magic system was so unique and don’t even get me started on the slow burn romance. Everything about this book had me enthralled and I know it will end up being a comfort read I come back to over and over. I absolutely loved it!

This was so intriguing and mysterious!! I couldn’t stop reading. I’m very excited for the next book as I’ve heard from a lot of people that they liked it more and I already loved this one:)
