This was a fun fantasy read—the magic system was really interesting and different from a lot of other fantasy books I read. It had an interesting cliff hanger that I’ll be excited to hear the resolution for in the sequel! Curious to see read what happens next!

What a refreshing read.
I'm so glad the author avoided very classic tropes, such as "you lied to me, and now that I know your deep dark secret, you're dead to me ".
Concepts such as understanding and forgiveness within a relationship makes this an enjoyable read, especially with the world building and magic system used. And Raven makes me swoon.... lol
I also really liked the different examples on the theme of consent, as most of them are not related to sex. Body autonomy, yes absolutely, but not sex. It examplifies that sex is not the only time where consent is needed.
Also, the writing is so beautiful??? Both the poetry and the narration. It's why I gave it a full 5 stars.

I loved this dark, gothic fantasy with a complex and twisty female main character. I love the unique magical structure that Rachel Gillig created - the world building is a breath of fresh air compared to the vague general "magical powers" that most fantasy novels employ. I enjoyed the fact that Gillig put so much effort into the fantasy part of this novel and built the complex relationships and unique aspects of each character such that the romance subplot felt genuine and realistic rather than forced. I appreciate how morally grey the characters are here - their motivations are real and complicated and multi-faceted, so no one feels one dimensional. This book builds with rapid speed to an incredible crescendo and I was so relieved that I already had the second book in the duology immediately accessible, because that ending! It was missing a little something from me in order to be a five star read but I really enjoyed it nonetheless.
