I had no idea what I was getting myself into when I picked up this book. I had stayed away from spoilers, somehow blocking out the storyline.
I was definitely not disappointed! I LOVED this book and read it so quickly that I could not put it down.
The magic aspect of this storyline I loved. The Nightmare was portrayed, at the beginning of the book, as the villain. Constantly living in Elspeth’s head, taunting her, but ultimately her protector. The fact that the villain, later in the book, was shown to be the King and the High Prince was incredible. The twist of the Nightmare being the Shepherd King had me placing the book down and staring shocked at the closed book for ten minutes.
I was taken on a rollercoaster ride of highs and lows, and found myself shouting at the book when Elspeth (the fmc) was being an idiot.
Thoroughly enjoyed this book and I’m already reaching for the second in the series. 5⭐️

Firstly characters immediately liked Elspeth and her character had allure making me want to know more. Her family made my blood boil even her aunt and uncles family.
Rayvn yew, oh I’m so worried as to why more people don’t call him their book boyfriends. Cause seriously I’ve got another one to add to my list *smh* I love the broody nature of him and how elspeth is the same.
The “side characters” really made the story too, jysper and elm I LOVED while I am so behind irritated at ione I am hoping she has something up her sleeve.
Oh and yeah the thing inside elspeths head, at first I liked him now I’m … indifferent & feel many things at what has taken place with elspeth and the Shepard king
Although I had soft dnf’d this book because I wanted to read something else when I came back to it… it ended up being a two day read in which I stayed up till 4am reading it because I literally could not put it down. And when I did I HAD DREAMS about it. It was paced perfect to me I would say “fast” paced but in a way that all made sense it didn’t skip things I thought were important but it also didn’t linger to long on how tbe cracks looked in the cobblestone LOL.
All this to say I thoroughly enjoyed this book and will be buying the 2nd one ASAP because I MUST know what is going to happen.

This was the perfect blend of plot, mood, character development, and magic. Gothic romantasy as advertised. I went into this with low expectations and no clue what it was about, but boy did it deliver and exceed. The magic system felt so unique and Rachel’s prose with describing the Nightmare inside Elspeth’s head was so clear. The yearning between the FMC and MMC was 10/10. The pacing was great - I was fully immersed and invested in the storyline. If the Libby gods bless me i’ll be rolling right into Two Twisted Crowns!
