I limped through the first 2/3 of this book. Everything felt formulaic and predictable, so much so that when the MC finally realized a crucial detail about her condition that had been apparent from the beginning, I sighed. The only thing of interest to me was the magic system using cards filled with ancient power, as well as the price extracted each time they were used. I jumped to the audiobook to see if that would help me get through the story better, but had an even harder time, as I can’t get into romantic scenes with just one narrator doing all the voices. Going back to my physical copy, I found that the last ~70 pages or so actually held my interest and gave me the gothic fairytale I had been hoping for from the beginning. I’m not sure it’s enough to have me continue the series, but it was certainly enough to bump up my rating.

Wow I can absolutely understand why people love this book. Obsessed with trees as last names, and the magic system was so unique

I binged this in one day. Absolutely loved. The magic was unique and so fun. The character arc and twists so creative. The story felt fresh with just enough world building. I’m blown away. I loved it.

Plot: Magic is outlawed. Only the deck of cards have magic are allowed. Each unique with consequences. We learn about those consequences and the magic through the eyes of the FMC. It felt like a mix of The Cruel Prince but not YA meets A Darker Shade of Magic.

Overall Rating: 5/5

TW: violence, death, cursing, sexual situations (M/F one easily skippable section)

Don’t you remember the story, Elspeth? Our story?

I thoroughly enjoyed every second of this fantasy romance! It was dark, twisting, and full of heart. Although there were some minor issues, they never took away from my enjoyment of the story and I can admit I was fully addicted.

The world of Blunder was strange, mysterious, and volatile, reminiscent of a gothic fairytale. It felt like a character in itself, with its poisonous mist, dark forest, and hidden history. The magic system was compelling and I was intrigued by the contrast between Providence Cards and the infected. Likewise, the characters were nuanced and sometimes surprising, and I particularly liked Elspeth and Ravyn. Their romance was sweet and heart-wrenching, although it was at first a little “insta-lovey”. Nevertheless, I loved their dynamic and I’m excited to see how they progress in the sequel.

This book could at times suffer from a lack of development, particularly where characterisation was concerned, and an additional hundred pages could have done a lot to rectify that. Similarly, it could be a little predictable and wasn’t quite as scary (in my opinion) as was said. However, these issues were relatively minor for me as I was thoroughly hooked from the first page, and I would still absolutely recommend it to anyone who wants to give it a go. I’ll be diving straight into the sequel 😍
