This book is so incredibly descriptive and honestly that’s my favorite part. The author is incredibly gifted at describing the smells around the main character without being annoying.

I attach so many memories to smell this book had me yanked by a giant hook from the opening paragraph. There is a beauty in scent and Erica captures it perfectly. I think a couple characters could have been more rounded, but considering the POV, I let it go.
The growth between Emmeline and Fisher was perfectly captured given the span of years it covers. Physical nuances, subtlety at it's finest.

I’m not sure why this “Reese’s Bookclub” didn’t make it as big as Crawdads. This is a wonderful story about Emmaline finding out who she is after spending the first 12 years of her life on an island with her father, knowing nothing if the outside world. All of Emmaline’s memories are tied to smells, hence the title of the book. I love the language Bauermeister uses to paint the world of her stories.
