as a lover of haunting of bly manor and all things haunting, this was a warm welcome
i actually loved this one even though ive never read anything like this one before
the story was intriguing and the characters too but i also didn’t get too attached to anyone or anything

I had the misfortune to read this during a book slump. I bet at a different time I would have loved the intense creepiness and the trail of breadcrumbs leading to the eventual big reveal. As it was, I was only moderately into it. I do feel like the pacing and characterization could maybe be improved, and the story felt oddly anachronistic in a way I'm not entirely sure was intentional. Overall, though, a quality YA horror read that will appeal to fans of "Mexican Gothic."
i can't tell if i just haven't read YA in a while or if the romantic subplot was kinda irritating (my spouse said it's actually because i'm jaded, ha)

I wish that the comparisons to other media were kept to marketing meetings and not shared with the public, because I think it actually does this book a disservice to compare it to Bly Manor. They have similar themes, and it was obviously inspired by Bly, but it doesn't have the same weight or depth; which is fine! It's a YA book, not an adult horror miniseries. But it set my expectations too high and it took me a little while to shake it. The broad strokes of mysterious manor + grief themes + lesbians does not Bly Manor make.
THAT SAID, I did enjoy this book. There were some nitpicky things that, as a writer, I wish the editor had caught and tidied, but overall I had a good time. Spooky, funny, mysterious. And gay! We love to see it. I WOULD watch a miniseries based on this. The overall concept was refreshingly unique and really interesting to read.
