Hauntingly beautiful. Macabre yet somehow cosy.

This is such a strange feeling. The book was filled with grief, death, all and all terrible things, but the whole time I felt safe reading it all. Like somebody held their arms around me as I turned pages, telling me it was okay and that I was safe.

The story is devastating and sad, yet holds such innocence in it that my heart softens the more I read.

Oh my, this book was too good. I’ve never read a horror novel and this was the perfect place to start. I found the premise of the plot and the whole twisted games the younger girls played to be intriguing so imagine my surprise when there was a romance between Marin and their older sister Evie 😻

It had me feeling like a fly rubbing its hands together. A sapphic horror story with a richxpoor trope? Say mf less.

Before I get into the romance (bc that’s what I primarily read) let’s get into the main point of the story; the horror aspects. It was super creepy and mysterious, not knowing exactly why dead things were popping up and why the hell them lil girls were acting so strange

I think there was a good build up of all these events happening until things were being revealed and connected. Gave me the creeps, I’ll say.

Now, the romance 😉 I actually really like how it wasn’t a focus in the first third of the book but became more prevalent as Evie and Marin’s relationship developed. Their connection felt very natural and didn’t feel forced, but more like they couldn’t help being drawn together. I loved how gentle they were with each other and how Marin was always in Evies corner when my girl was going thru her shit 💔

My favorite scene still remains
Evies apology after they got into their first argument. She was so distraught and Marin was just all lovey dovey that Evie had herself so twisted up over disappointing her

I also ADORED the eventual found family we got with Wren, Thea and Neera. It was so sweet. Hell, even with Thisbe

Overall, an amazing read

An insightful story about grief, anxiety, and the price of bottling emotions wrapped neatly in a lovely supernatural horror.

Excellently written, great characterizations, and very messy in the best possible ways. Life moves on and we have to let go.

Might very well be my new favorite book.

I really enjoyed this Frankenstein-esque tale of love, loyalty, and generational trauma. Death and life are braided together in a timeless dance.

Pretty solid story. The premise is very gothic and scary, which I liked. I think the book had a lot of potential, but in my opinion, it was only half done well. For most of the story, it was pretty slow and honestly kind of boring. It only got interesting near the end.

I really wish the author had done more with the foreshadowing and mystery. There wasn’t much pulling me in, and for a while I didn’t even think anything supernatural was happening.

That said, the relationship was cute, and I liked the family well enough. I just wish the buildup had been stronger.

Great character development, EXCELLENT foreshadowing work. Also, the chapter titles are hilarious.
Couple of gripes: if you listen to the audiobook, the narration of the cook has a stereotypical South Asian accent that is a little hard to take.
Also, the description is a little misleading. This is not a monster book.
