DNF @ 42%. This book and I were not vibing. It read much younger YA than I was anticipating and it was not very creepy or spooky. The narrator also was getting on my nerves using the same voice for both the Alice and Evie? Weird.

This was a relatively good read. I enjoyed the spooky atmosphere, and there were some eerie moments that had me freaking out a bit! The start and the end were much stronger than the middle. My problem with this book was that it’s quite similar to a couple of others of this genre, YA gothic tales in a spooky house, but not as good. It reminded me a lot of House of Salt and Sorrows and the sequel, but a bit darker! But like I said, wasn’t as good. I liked the LGBTQIA representation and I liked Evie’s character. I did not like the constant dead animals!

hmmm i've honestly read a lot of books similar to this before and i've read this concept in a better written format, but it's still good. mostly because of the atmosphere, some parts of the plot, and just the vibes yknow. nice gothic elements. my biggest issue was the pacing, because the awkward pacing made the beginning and the ending much better than the middle part of the novel. the romance didn't quite impact me but it is refreshing that there's lgbt+ representation there. i also thought it was sweet of the author to reference shirley jackson's hill house, one of my all time favourites.

I devoured this book. This type of story is why I read. The writing was pretty good but could have been more complex at times. I love the title and cover. There were a few things that were unnecessary, leading to my 4 star review instead of 5. I will keep my eye on this author.
