The Haunting of Bly Manor is by far the best piece of media I’ve ever experienced, so I was a bit hesitant to pick this up when the description compares itself to Bly Manor. I’m glad I overcame my initial hesitation because I do believe this is actually worthy of the comparison. This feels like a YA version of Bly Manor (but replacing Bly’s horror with fantasy).
I understand some of the critiques saying that there were parts of this book that were boring, but as lesbian the “boring” romantic and yearning parts were my favorite. I am taking a star off because I don’t think this is truly a horror book, it’s more fantasy. Death being a subject does not make a book a horror.
Overall, I really loved this and I really wish I had this book when I was a teen. This book really would’ve helped me with my identity and helped me understand my feelings if I had it at a young age.

This novel has a classic horror setting—an ominous house in Maine owned by a renowned horror writer (Alice). The writer invites the daughter (Marin) of a recently deceased childhood friend (Cordelia) to come play nanny for the summer to two daughters (Thea and Wren), just before her elder daughter, Evie, unexpectedly comes home. The girls at Lovelace are also grieving their father, who died the year prior. However, it quickly becomes clear to Marin this place has secrets. Sure, she could leave, but she has nowhere else to go.
This is a third-person close POV from Marin’s perspective, which seems typical of horror novels. She was totally relatable as a grieving, sapphic girl with intense anxiety and deep loyalty.
The character development and plot was extremely well done. I did see a few plot points coming, but I’m a writer in her 40s reading YA, so that’s expected.
Some of the descriptions of Maine are so lovey to offset the creepiness, and I’d definitely say this is for you if you like creepy better than gory.
Some of the comps that came to mind for me are The Others, I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House, and What Big Teeth.

I have never read the author and I have been trying to Branch out my genres and I can honestly say it was a good book. If you are a fan of pet semetery, The Shining, Powder, The Others, then you're going to love this book. however, if You're like me and have issues with animals being hurt or killed even though they may be zombie animals. just when you spot the point where the animal is in the book, skip a couple lines and you'll be okay. there wasn't many but there was enough.
Nice twisty mystery with some horror tendencies, a little bit of romance and found family.

Really well done, it eased you into the mystery with a comforting hand until it pushed you down the hill, where you tumbled breathlessly to the finish. The horror imagery was sudden and visceral, the emotions of the characters well conveyed, and the full plot only revealed piece by enjoyable piece.

Eh???
Super easy read and I'm glad I saved it for an in between book
Honestly Ms Kyrie I can TELL you're a fan of Mike Flanagan and though I can relate this honestly just made me want to rewatch Hill House and Bly Manor
I feel like everything in this book was just... Fine??? I have no major issues with anything but also nothing stood out.
So yeah, solid 3 star territory
