This was a good book. A good find too. I don’t think I would have ever picked this book up but I’m happy I did. The story of Mr Chetan, Betty and Solo is emotionally intense. From the self harm of solo, to Betty’s loneliness and Mr. Chetan’s fight to have love, it was all tied together to tell us a story of Trinidad. What life is like for those who live on the island, the political and social struggles certain groups face and how community triumphs over that. I would say this is the first time I have ever read a book that vividly talks about self harm and those parts were difficult but it gave me an insight I never had before. I enjoyed reading it, would I read it again, no. But it was good all round.

I loved that it split between the characters POVs because it really gave you deep insight into their feelings which made everything hit a lot deeper. Also, the depiction of Trinidadian culture was very well done; from the descriptions of food/cooking, the dialect, to the nasty parts like the raging homophobia in Trinidadian society. It was just a very REAL book and I throughly enjoyed it.
