This was the first of Irving's book I read a million years ago, and became a huge fan. I've read all of his books since.
Graphic and disturbing at times. But I love Irving's style of narration.
John Irving does plotting better than any one else it actually scares me. This man (John? Garp?) is sick just like me, I laughed I BAWLED MY EYES OUT. I just love him
One of my favorite books ever. I read it in middle or high school and am certain it needs to be revisited!
I adore this book. It's the least romantic of all of Irving's novels. The big surprise/Terrible Event is truly terrible. I like that. The characters are all very realistic but still so clearly characters. Good book. Great book. Perhaps a Top Ten book for me.
Unpopular opinion: this was my least favorite John Irving novel. It had some great characters and parts, but was way, way, unnecessarily too long imo
The World According to Garp is an extremely well written book. I loved the movie and I thought it was time to check out the book. I have to say that there was a few times in the book that I wanted to skip ahead. It was mainly Garp’s books inside the book. I loved getting more details about some of the things that had happened in the movie that they really didn’t go into too much detail about. I wish the movie had done more with Ellen James then they did. I thought the book did an amazing job with her. I loved the ending where you find out what happened to everyone pretty much up until they died. All in all I think this was a great book that I would read again, just like I watch the movie again and again.
(I am glad that the version I read did not have this cover on it.)

“You know, everybody dies. My parents died. Your father died. Everybody dies. I'm going to die too. So will you. The thing is, to have a life before we die. It can be a real adventure having a life.”
I read this the first time in 1978 or '79. It was my first John Irving. I loved it then and I still love it. The audio version I listened to had a fascinating afterward read by John Irving.
